What is Endometriosis?

It is a condition in which tissue similar to the Endometrium the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus.

What are the most common symptoms of Endometriosis?

Pain and infertility are the common symptoms.

How common is Endometriosis ?

10% of reproductive age women have Endometriosis.

                                Very  few people know that it exists as a problem because it can appear with varied symptoms such as sub fertility ( Taking a longer time to get pregnant ),Pelvic  pain associated with menstrual cycle , chronic pelvic pain ,pain during sex, pain during urination, pain with defecation ( bowel movements) and pain in the lower back or thighs. Sometimes there is no pain hence it is difficult to detect.

What advise can we give an women who thinks she has endometriosis?

It is important for the patients to share with their Doctor any pain or discomfort without feeling embarrassed as pain is not normal.  She should consult a proper  Gynecologist.

If left untreated what are the complications Endometriosis can cause scarring and damage to pelvic organs(Ovaries and fallopian tubes ) which can be irreversible and there by cause infertility.

How to diagnose Endometriosis?

1. Pelvic ultrasonography

2. CT & MRI

3. Laparoscopy for direct visualization and confirmation.

Treatment can be medical/surgical depending on severity of case pain can be relieved with oral contraceptive and progestins ,Gnrh Analogue surgery may help infertile patients for subsequent conception.
